Proof-of-Payment (POP)
All customers must have valid Proof-of-Payment such as a tapped PRESTO card, PRESTO Ticket, debit or credit card, paper transfer, TTC Convention Pass or Day Pass when travelling on the TTC.
Your POP proves you have paid your fare and may be requested at any time by a Fare Inspector (in uniform or plain clothes), Special Constable, Operator, Station Collector or Customer Service Agent when you transfer between a bus, streetcar or the subway. Proof-of-Payment is required on all streetcar routes and streetcars are marked with a special POP decal.
Where and how do I get my Proof-of-Payment?
You must get your Proof-of-Payment where you pay your fare at the start of your journey. Your tapped PRESTO card' PRESTO Ticket, or debit or credit card is your POP.
Streetcar
PRESTO
- Tap your PRESTO card, PRESTO Ticket, debit or credit card (including the cards loaded in your mobile wallet) on a reader at the start of your journey. It is important that you remove your card or PRESTO Ticket from your wallet to avoid multiple cards being charged when you tap.
- Your fare will be deducted and a transfer will be applied to your card or ticket. Your transfer is valid for two hours.
- Tap your card or PRESTO Ticket on a reader every time you transfer between vehicles or a subway station. This validates your transfer. As long as you are within two hours of your first tap you will not be charged another fare.
Cash, ticket or token
- Pay your fare (cash, TTC ticket or token) at the Fares and Transfers Machine. Remember to take your POP receipt from the tray at the bottom of the machine.

Fare inspection and Proof-of-Payment
Fare Inspectors have a difficult job that’s important to making our system run. They will always announce themselves clearly. Please treat them with respect and have your Proof-of-Payment ready, just as you would if you were on a commuter train and a ticket collector came through the car.
At any point in your journey, you may be asked to show Proof-of-Payment. You may be asked:
- At a subway station.
- On a vehicle.
- As you exit a vehicle.
Keep your tapped PRESTO card, PRESTO Ticket, debit or credit card (including the cards loaded in your mobile wallet), paper transfer, TTC Convention Pass or Day Pass, or validated TTC ticket handy so that you can show your proof of payment when requested. If you do not have Proof-of-Payment, you may be issued a fine, with penalties of up to $425 or a criminal charge.
If you have questions about Proof-of-Payment, please ask a TTC representative or call our Customer Service office at 416-393-3030.
