Starting Tuesday, September 1, 2026, paying for the TTC is becoming more flexible with the introduction of monthly fare capping.

With monthly fare capping, Adult, Youth, Senior and Fair Pass customers who pay with a PRESTO card, PRESTO in mobile wallet, Interac® Debit card or credit card, including cards in mobile wallet, will automatically ride free after reaching 47 paid trips in a calendar month.

That means you do not need to pay upfront for a monthly pass or decide in advance how often you will ride. Just tap as you go using the same card or device every time, and once you reach the monthly fare cap, the rest of your rides that month are free.

The Youth, Adult, Senior, and Fair Pass Transit Discount Program TTC Monthly Passes and the Youth and Senior 12-Month Passes will be discontinued as of Monday, August 31, 2026.

Adult 12-Month Pass subscribers and customers who purchase a TTC Post-Secondary Monthly Pass should continue using those passes as they provide the best value.

Here is what you need to know:

  • Monthly fare capping starts on September 1, 2026.
  • Eligible customers who pay with a PRESTO card, PRESTO in mobile wallet, or Interac® Debit or credit card (including mobile wallet) will automatically receive free travel on the TTC after 47 paid trips in a calendar month.
  • There is no need to buy a monthly pass, sign up, or opt in to be able to participate.
  • A paid trip is the first tap that starts your two-hour transfer period. Any additional taps within that two-hour transfer window are free.
  • To reach the monthly fare cap, you must use the same payment method and the same card or mobile device throughout the month.
  • If you switch between a physical card, smartphone, smartwatch or another payment method, your trips are counted separately, and it will take longer to reach the monthly cap.
  • You must continue to tap every time you board a vehicle or enter a station, even after reaching the monthly fare cap.
  • Paid trip counts reset on the first day of each calendar month.
  • TTC and regional transit agency fare caps are separate. Only trips that start on the TTC count toward the TTC monthly fare cap.

How fare capping works

Monthly fare capping makes it easier to get the best fare value without needing to buy a monthly pass in advance.

Starting September 1, 2026, eligible customers can tap their PRESTO card, PRESTO in mobile wallet, or Interac® Debit card or credit card (including mobile wallet) when boarding a vehicle or entering a station.

Once you reach 47 paid trips in the same calendar month using the same payment method and same card or device, you will not be charged for additional TTC trips for the rest of that month. Your paid trip count resets on the first day of the next month.

What counts as a paid trip?

A paid trip is the first tap that marks the beginning of a two-hour transfer period. When you tap your card or mobile device on a reader or fare gate to begin your trip, your fare is deducted and a two-hour transfer is applied. Any additional taps during that two-hour transfer period are free and do not count as new paid trips toward the monthly fare cap.

For example, if you tap onto a bus and then transfer to the subway within two hours, that counts as one paid trip.

Use the same card or device all month

To reach the monthly fare cap as quickly as possible, you must use the same payment method and same card or device every time you travel. This means choosing one way to pay and using it consistently throughout the calendar month.

For example:

  • If you use your PRESTO card, keep using that same PRESTO card.
  • If you use PRESTO in a mobile wallet, keep using the same mobile wallet and device.
  • If you use your smartphone to pay, keep using that same phone and same payment method.
  • If you use your smartwatch to pay, keep using that same smartwatch and same payment method.
  • If you use a physical Interac® Debit or credit card, keep using that same physical card.

If you switch between payment methods or devices, your trips will be counted separately. For example, if you tap with Apple Pay or Google Pay on your phone one day and use the same physical Interac® Debit card another day, those taps will have separate paid trip counts and will delay when you reach the monthly fare cap.

To avoid delays, choose one payment method or device and stick with it all month.

Keep tapping every time you ride

You must tap every time you board a vehicle or enter a station, even after you have reached the monthly fare cap. Tapping is still required to open fare gates, validate your trip, capture your Proof-of-Payment, and show that you are eligible to travel at no additional cost after reaching the cap.

If a Provincial Offences Officer inspects your fare, your tap confirms your Proof-of-Payment.

Benefits of fare capping

Monthly fare capping gives customers more flexibility and makes it easier to pay for the TTC.

With monthly fare capping:

  • You only pay as you go.
  • You do not need to pay upfront for a monthly pass.
  • You do not need to decide in advance whether a monthly pass is worth it.
  • You automatically receive free travel on the TTC after reaching the monthly fare cap.
  • You will pay the same as or less than the cost of a monthly pass if you reach the cap.
  • You can ride more, without paying more, once you reach the monthly cap.
  • Adult, Youth, Senior, and Fair Pass customers will no longer need to purchase a TTC Monthly Pass after August 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is monthly fare capping?

Monthly fare capping means you pay as you go until you reach a set number of paid trips in a calendar month. Once you reach the monthly cap, the rest of your TTC trips that month are free.

Starting September 1, 2026, customers will ride free after 47 paid trips in a calendar month.

  • When does fare capping start?

Monthly fare capping starts on September 1, 2026.

  • Who can use monthly fare capping?

Monthly fare capping will be available to Adult, Youth, Senior and Fair Pass customers who pay with a PRESTO card, PRESTO in mobile wallet, Interac® Debit card or credit card, including mobile wallet.

  • How many trips do I need to take before I ride free?

Starting September 1, 2026, you will receive free TTC travel after 47 paid trips in a calendar month.

  • What is a paid trip?

A paid trip is the first tap that marks the start of your two-hour transfer period. If you tap again within that two-hour transfer period, you will not be charged again, and it will not count as another paid trip toward your monthly fare cap.

  • Do transfers count toward the monthly fare cap?

No. Additional taps within your two-hour transfer period are free and do not count as separate paid trips. Only the first tap that starts your two-hour transfer period counts as a paid trip.

  • Do I need to sign up for fare capping?

No. Fare capping is automatic. Starting September 1, 2026, eligible customers will automatically receive free travel after reaching 47 paid trips in a calendar month, as long as they use the same payment method and same card or device.

  • Do I need to use the same card or device every time?

Yes. To reach the monthly fare cap, you must use the same payment method and same card or device throughout the calendar month.

For example, your phone and smartwatch are counted separately, even if they are connected to the same Interac® Debit or credit card. If you switch between devices, each device will have its own paid trip count.

To reach the cap as quickly as possible, choose one payment method or device and use it consistently all month.

  • What happens if I switch between my PRESTO card, Interac® Debit card, credit card, mobile phone or smartwatch?

Each payment method and device has its own paid trip count. If you switch between payment methods or devices during the month, it will take longer to reach the monthly fare cap.

  • Do I still need to tap after I reach the monthly fare cap?

Yes. You must tap every time you board a vehicle or enter a station, even after reaching the monthly fare cap. This ensures your Proof-of-Payment is captured on your card or device if a Provincial Offences Officer inspects your fare.

  • How can I keep track of my monthly trips and know when I've reached the cap?

You will not receive a notification when you are close to reaching the cap. When you tap to pay, the fare reader will show the fare charged for that trip. Once you have reached the monthly cap, qualifying trips will show as $0 for the rest of the month.

To track your progress, sign in to your PRESTO account online or in the PRESTO app. Customers using a PRESTO card or PRESTO in mobile wallet can check their loyalty summary in the PRESTO app.

Customers paying by credit card, Interac® Debit card or card in a mobile wallet can review their transaction history and manually count their qualifying trips.

  • When does my paid trip count reset?

Your paid trip count resets on the first day of each calendar month.

  • Will monthly or yearly passes still be available?

With the introduction of monthly fare capping, the following TTC passes will be discontinued as of August 31, 2026:

    • Youth TTC Monthly Pass
    • Adult TTC Monthly Pass
    • Senior TTC Monthly Pass
    • Fair Pass Transit Discount Program TTC Monthly Pass
    • Youth 12-Month Pass
    • Senior 12-Month Pass

TTC Post-Secondary Monthly Passes and Adult 12-Month Passes will continue to be available.

  • Should I continue using my Adult 12-Month TTC Pass or Post-Secondary Monthly Pass?

Yes. Adult 12-Month Pass subscribers and post-secondary students who purchase a TTC Post-Secondary Monthly Pass should continue to use these passes because they guarantee the lowest fare and best value.

  • What if I have a Youth or Senior 12-Month Pass?

That’s OK, you will continue to benefit from the low fares and unlimited travel these passes provide. However, they won’t be available after August 31.

  • What if I already signed up for an Adult 12-Month Pass and want to use fare capping instead?

Adult 12-Month Pass customers who prefer to use fare capping will be able to cancel without paying the difference between the regular monthly pass price and the discounted 12-Month Pass price. Customers will not be charged a penalty fee related to cancelling because of this change.

  • What if my 12-Month Pass is set to Autorenew?

Customers with impacted auto-renewing 12-Month Pass products (Youth and Senior passes) will receive additional information about account changes and options from PRESTO.

  • What if I use Fair Pass?

Fair Pass customers will be eligible for fare capping. Use the same PRESTO card throughout the calendar month to reach the monthly fare cap.

The Fair Pass Transit Discount Program TTC Monthly Pass will be discontinued as of August 31, 2026.

  • Will monthly fare capping apply to PRESTO in mobile wallet?

Yes. Fare capping will apply to PRESTO in mobile wallet. To reach the monthly fare cap, use the same mobile wallet and device throughout the calendar month.

  • Will monthly fare capping apply if I pay with an Interac® Debit or credit card?

Yes. Monthly fare capping will apply to customers who pay with an Interac® Debit or credit card. To reach the monthly fare cap, use the same card or the same mobile wallet and device throughout the calendar month.

  • How does monthly fare capping work with the One Fare Program?

Monthly fare capping and One Fare will work together, but fare caps are separate by transit agency. Only trips that start on the TTC count toward the TTC monthly fare cap. Trips that start on another transit agency may count toward that agency’s fare cap, where applicable.

    For example:

    • If your trip starts on the TTC, you pay a TTC fare and transfer to MiWay, York Region Transit, Brampton Transit or Durham Region Transit for free.
    • If your return trip starts on one of those regional transit agencies, you pay that agency’s fare and receive a free transfer onto the TTC.
    • Once you reach 47 paid trips that start on the TTC in a calendar month, your additional trips that start on the TTC are free for the rest of that month.
  • Are TTC fare caps and regional transit agency fare caps the same?

No. Fare caps are separated by transit agency, and only trips that start on the TTC count toward the TTC monthly fare cap. Trips that start on another transit agency may count toward that agency’s fare cap, where applicable. If you travel on the TTC and another transit agency in the same month, you may be working toward more than one fare cap.

  • Will monthly fare capping apply to Wheel-Trans?

Yes. Monthly fare capping will be available on Wheel-Trans when customers tap with an eligible payment method.

  • Will monthly fare capping work if I have an unregistered PRESTO card?

Yes. Monthly fare capping will work with an unregistered PRESTO card. However, customers with a registered PRESTO account can view their transaction history, which may make it easier to track paid trips and see when they have reached the monthly fare cap.
