TTC opens doors to two new stations for Doors Open Toronto this Saturday
This Saturday only, May 27, the TTC is opening its doors for a sneak peek of two of its newest subway stations, as part of the 18th annual Doors Open Toronto. The two stations – Downsview Park and York University – are part of the six station, 8.6 km Line 1 subway extension – also known as the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) - into York Region, opening later this year.
Visitors will have access to the stations, can take self-guided tours, discover unique facts about how the stations were built and how they will operate, and talk to project staff and artist Panya Clark Espinal.
When: Saturday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. ONE DAY ONLY
Where:
Downsview Park Station – 1245 Sheppard Ave. West (no onsite parking available). Located at Downsview Park on the south side of Sheppard Avenue West, centred under GO Transit’s Barrie Commuter Rail line. Includes: connection to Barrie GO rail service.
York University Station – 4700 Keele St. Located at York University, crossing underneath Ian Macdonald Boulevard in the heart of the Keele Campus at the east end of the Harry W. Arthurs Common. Please note that this event is not accessible to people who use mobility devices or those who have trouble with stairs, as elevators and escalators are not yet operational. There is no secure storage area for strollers and wagons, which cannot be taken into the stations.
Shuttle bus service will be offered from Sheppard West Station to Downsview Park and York University Stations. Regular fares will apply. Free parking is available at Sheppard West Station. No parking is available at Downsview Park Station.
The TYSSE project is jointly funded by the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario, the City of Toronto and The Regional Municipality of York. The Government of Canada has committed up to $697 million to the project. The Province of Ontario has provided $870 million through the Move Ontario Trust. Significant investment income has been earned by the Trust, which helped fund the project. Total City of Toronto funding will amount to $904 million and total Regional Municipality of York funding will amount to $604 million.
