Final planned subway closures of 2016

This weekend, Dec. 3-4, will mark the final planned subway closures of 2016. Line 2 Bloor-Danforth will close between St George and Pape stations only for track work, and Line 1 Yonge-University will close between Wilson and Downsview stations only for work on the new Automatic Train Control (ATC) signal system.

Shuttle buses will run frequently throughout both closures, stopping only at subway stations along the routes.

Wheel-Trans buses will operate between St George and Pape Stations on Line 2, and between Lawrence West and Downsview stations on Line 1. Customers can speak to any TTC staff to request the service.

When installation is complete in 2019, ATC will result in a more modern and reliable signal system that will allow for a 25 per cent increase in the number of trains operating on Line 1. While the TTC does much of its subway maintenance work at the conclusion of service each night, it will continue to require weekend closures to complete ATC and state-of-good-repair work, like replacing track and maintaining switches. One weekend of work during a closure is equivalent to about five weeks of nightly work.

PRESTO is not yet available on all shuttle buses. Customers should carry tokens, tickets or cash in case the bus that arrives is not yet PRESTO-equipped.

Regular service resumes Monday at 6 a.m. Next year’s subway closure schedule, and the work that will be accomplished, will be announced early in the new year.
