TTC signal work on Line 1 this weekend

Surface routes diverting for events and construction

This weekend, June 18-19, TTC crews will lay up to 21,000 ft. of cable for the TTC's new Automatic Train Control (ATC) signal system, requiring the portion of Line 1 between St Clair West and Downsview stations to close. Shuttle buses will operate, stopping at subway stations along the route.

When installation is complete in 2019, ATC will result in a more modern, reliable signal system and a 25 per cent increase in capacity on Line 1.  While the TTC does much of its subway maintenance work at the conclusion of service each night, it will continue to require weekend closures to complete ATC and state-of-good-repair work, like replacing track and keeping switches well-maintained. One weekend of work during a subway closure is equivalent to about five weeks of nightly work.

For more information on weekend subway closures, watch the TTC's explainer video at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Et1BqVGNVUE

Wheel-Trans will be available at St George, Eglinton West and Downsview stations for customers requiring an accessible connection. Customers can speak with any TTC staff member to request the service.

To provide a faster trip for customers, shuttle buses will not service local stops between subway stations, and parking will be restricted on Bathurst St. between Ava Rd. and Glencairn Ave. Glencairn Station will be closed.

Regular service resumes Monday morning at 6 a.m. The next scheduled subway closures are:

  • Line 3 Scarborough: Entire line June 25 – 26
  • Line 2 Bloor-Danforth: Pape to St George stations - late opening – June 26
  • Line 2 Bloor-Danforth: Woodbine to Pape stations– July 9 only

As well, to accommodate the many events that occur in a vibrant and exciting city like Toronto, some surface routes will divert for short periods of time.
