TTC approves five-cent fare increase

The board of the Toronto Transit Commission today approved the TTC’s 2013 Operating, Capital and Wheel-Trans budgets, including a five-cent fare increase effective Jan. 1, 2013, which was approved in principle this September.

The fare increase is in line with the rate of inflation, but will see all cash fares and children’s fares frozen next year. The TTC is expected to carry a record 528 million riders in 2013, with increased service to meet the ridership demand. The TTC’s 2013 Operating Budget is $1.54 billion, with almost $411 million in subsidy from the City of Toronto.

“I am pleased staff was able to keep the fare increase to a minimum by finding efficiencies inside the TTC, while increasing service to meet demand for our customers,” said TTC Chair Karen Stintz.

Added TTC CEO Andy Byford: “My objective in balancing the TTC’s operating budget for next year was to focus on customers and service. I am pleased we were able to do this with only a modest fare increase.”
