Line 2 Automatic Train Control
Background
Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth) opened on February 26, 1966. It stretches 26.2 kilometres from Kipling to Kennedy station (31 stations in total) and has been operating on a fixed block signal system since it opened.
As part of the TTC’s ongoing modernization efforts and to accommodate increased ridership and provide the best possible service to our customers, the signal system on Line 2 will be replaced with a new state-of-the-art signalling system known as Automatic Train Control (ATC). ATC is operational on Line 1.
What we’re doing
The TTC is modernizing Line 2 by replacing the existing fixed-block signalling system with ATC. The project includes the design, installation oversight, testing and commissioning of the new ATC system, as well as integration with future Line 2 subway trains and supporting infrastructure. Similar technology has successfully been implemented on Line 1.
Benefits
Increased reliability
- ATC allows more trains to operate safely with closer spacing, helping to improve service reliability and reduce signal-related delays.
Improved travel times
- Trains operating on ATC operate more consistently and closer to the civil speed limit, helping to make travel times shorter and more consistent.
- New signalling technology results in fewer delays due to signal issues.
Lower Operating Costs
- Train movements will be optimized with ATC, which will result in electricity usage becoming more efficient.
Impacts to customers
The ATC system is complex. Installation, testing and commissioning activities can only be performed efficiently when trains are not operating.
To safely perform this work, the TTC will close portions of the subway during some weekends or overnight periods.
Information about weekend closures or overnight work will be posted in advance on theweekend subway closures page or service alerts page.
Project status
In 2026, the TTC awarded the contract for the Line 2 ATC signalling system to Hitachi Rail Canada Inc. following a competitive procurement process. The project will replace legacy infrastructure with an advanced communications-based train control system that will improve reliability, operational flexibility and customer service.
The project is currently in the design phase with work schedule to commence later this year.
Next Steps
- Complete detailed system design.
- Installation planning and infrastructure work will continue across Line 2.
- ATC equipment will be installed, tested and commissioned in phases.
- The new system will be integrated with future Line 2 subway trains.
