Russell Carhouse Upgrades
Timeline: On-going – late 2029
The Russell Yard modernization project commenced in mid-2022 as the first major phase of upgrades to the Russell Carhouse, a critical facility for Toronto’s streetcar network. This initiative is designed to prepare the yard for the next generation of streetcars and improve overall operational efficiency. This first phase was completed in November, 2025.
Key enhancements that have been completed include:
- Track Replacement: All yard tracks have been replaced with durable concrete-embedded rail and switches, ensuring improved stability and reduced maintenance needs.
- Noise Reduction Measures: Track lubrication systems have been installed on all storage tracks to minimize wheel squeal and reduce streetcar noise in the surrounding community.
- Utility Upgrades: Underground utility services have been completely replaced, and a new stormwater retention management system has been implemented to enhance environmental sustainability and drainage control.
- Electrical System Enhancements: The overhead electrical infrastructure has been upgraded to support pantograph operations, aligning with modern streetcar technology.
These improvements mark a significant step toward modernizing the Russell Carhouse and ensuring it meets future transit demands.
Work will continue, with additional upgrades planned to accommodate new streetcars arriving in early 2026.
Next steps: Carhouse extension and modifications (start date: as early as December 18, 2025 – late 2029, TBD*):
- Construct the west extension of the carhouse to allow for an additional maintenance bay for new streetcars.
- Upgrade the existing carhouse building to accommodate new streetcars.
- Reconfigure maintenance tracks and pits in the carhouse for maintenance.
