King Street East and Church Street

303/503 Kingston Rd., 504/304 King and 508 Lake Shore streetcars will begin diverting this Sunday, May 11, 2025, due to construction at the King Street East and Church Street intersection.

Affected streetcar routes due to construction

During Phases 1 and 2 (May 11 to late June/early July 2025), watermain replacement work will affect TTC streetcar service as follows:

  • 503/303 Kingston Rd, 504/304 King, and 508 Lake Shore streetcars will operate via Queen Street between Broadview Avenue and Spadina Avenue, via Church Street, Adelaide Street/Richmond Street, and York Street.
  • 504C King (Bathurst-Distillery) and 504/304D King (Bathurst-Broadview & Gerrard) replacement buses will operate on King Street between River Street and Bathurst Street

From late June/early July to August 30, 2025, once the King Street East and Church Street intersection closes to through traffic, 504C King and 504/304D King replacement buses will divert around the intersection as follows:

  • Eastbound: diverting from King Street West and Yonge Street via south on Yonge Street, east on Front Street East, north on Jarvis Street to King Street East to resume regular routing.
  • Westbound: diverting from King Street East and Jarvis Street via south on Jarvis Street, west on Front Street East, west on Wellington Street East, north on Yonge Street to King Street West to resume regular routing. Wheel-Trans services will be accessible in all areas where local traffic is permitted.

The TTC plans to return regular service on these streetcar routes in early September 2025.

Construction details 

Starting as early May 12, 2025, and continuing until late August 2025, the City of Toronto and the TTC will begin construction at the King Street East and Church Street intersection. This work will include:

  • Replacing the ageing watermain (City of Toronto); and 
  • Renewing the streetcar tracks (City of Toronto and TTC)

Work phases, timelines and travel impacts

Phase 1 – May 12 to June 2025

  • The City's contractor will replace the watermain on the north, east and west sides of the King Street East and Church Street intersection.
  • At a minimum, one travel lane will be maintained in each direction on King Street and Church Street.

Phase 2 – June to July 2025

  • The City's contractor will replace the watermain on the south, east and west sides of the King Street East and Church Street intersection.
  • At a minimum, one travel lane will be maintained in each direction on King Street and Church Street.

Phase 3 – July to August 2025

  • The City's contractor will replace the watermain and remove the watermain at the King Street East and Church Street intersection
  • The intersection will be closed to vehicular and cyclist traffic. 

Phase 4 – August 2025

  • The City's contractor and the TTC will install new streetcar tracks at the intersection of King Street East and Church Street.
  • Once installed, TTC crews will test the newly construction streetcar tracks.
  • Crews will also complete replace the sidewalk and install tactile plates at the intersection.
  • The intersection will continue to be closed to vehicles and cyclists.

Sidewalk access will be maintained, and if closures are required, temporary pedestrian detours will be established with appropriate detour signage.

Access to businesses and properties will be maintained.

Work hours

  • TTC crews will need to work around the clock (24/7) during new rail installation to preserve the integrity and quality of the new rail and freshly poured concrete.
  • Noise and lights from construction vehicles/machinery should be expected.

Rail delivery/storage and rail installation information

  • Before rail installation starts in July/August, the TTC will deliver new rail. The rail will be delivered overnight to ensure efficiency and safety, as there is less traffic during this time.
  • The new rail will be stored at or near the work zone.
  • As work progresses, TTC crews will take new rail from the storage area for installation at the King Street East and Church Street intersection.
  • The TTC will communicate the specific delivery date/s and rail storage locations ahead of installation.
