Track Renewal and Overhead Upgrades

College Street and Bay Street

College Street and Bay Street Track Renewal and Overhead Upgrades

What we are doing and why

This year, the City of Toronto will be replacing sewer infrastructure on College Street between Yonge Street and Bay Street. The City and the TTC will also renew streetcar tracks on College/Carlton from Bay Street to Church Street, along with upgrading streetcar overhead wiring in the area. Work is anticipated to commence in March 2026 with a pause in construction from mid-April to end of July 2026 and be completed in December 2026.

TTC service as of March 2, 2026

The intersection of College and Bay is fully closed for construction as of March 2. As a result, TTC has adjusted service to 506/306 Carlton streetcars and 19 Bay buses.  TTC service is expected to return in May 2026 after all work is complete including overhead upgrades and commissioning.

As of March 2:

506/306 Carlton streetcars are diverting both ways via McCaul Street, Dundas Street, and Parliament Street to regular routing.

A 506/306 Carlton bus replacement service has been introduced, operating between Spadina Station and Broadview and Gerrard via:

  • Eastbound: Spadina, College, University, Gerrard, Yonge, Carlton, Parliament, Gerrard
  • Westbound: Gerrard, Parliament, Carlton, Yonge, Wellesley, Queens Park, College, Spadina

19 Bay buses are diverting via:

  • Northbound: Gerrard, Yonge, Wellesley
  • Southbound: Wellesley, Queens Park, University, Gerrard

Regular 506/306 Carlton streetcar service and 19 Bay bus service are expected to resume in May and during FIFA World Cup 2026™.

Additional diversions will be required when work resumes on College/Carlton for Phases 2 and 3 after FIFA World Cup 2026. TTC will communicate these changes at a later date.

Overhead Upgrades

Over the course of this project, TTC crews will upgrade and commission/test the overhead infrastructure in the area while streetcars are diverting. Work may take place both during day and night shifts and will involve TTC overhead trucks with hydraulic equipment. While efforts will be made by the crew to keep noise to a minimum, beeping sounds when the trucks are backing up will be audible. Equipment lights may also be noticeable.

Rail delivery and storage at College and Bay

During the first week of construction, TTC plans to deliver new streetcar rails on flatbed trailers and store them at or near the work zone on College Street and Bay Street.

To support this work, the TTC will deliver new streetcar rail panels to the site nightly from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., starting Friday, March 6 to Sunday, March 8.

Temporary lane and parking restrictions may be required. Final storage locations may be adjusted after coordination with the Contractor. As new rail installation progresses, the flatbed trailers will be removed from site.

Thank you for your patience as we improve Toronto’s transit infrastructure.
