King Street West between Dufferin Street and Shaw Street
What we are doing and why
In late February to December 2024, the City of Toronto and TTC will begin multiple infrastructure upgrades on King Street West from Dufferin Street to Shaw Street, which include:
- Replacing the watermain on King Street West (Dufferin Street to Shaw Street). For more information on this work, please see the City's project webpage.
- Renewing the aging streetcar tracks on King Street West (Dufferin Street to Shaw Street).
- A full renewal of the streetcar tracks at the King Street West and Dufferin Street intersection.
As a result, starting on February 18 to December 2024, the following routes will begin diverting around this construction:
- 501A Queen streetcars will divert onto Dufferin Street (to Dufferin Gate Loop) until 10 p.m. After 10 p.m., 501B Queen streetcars will operate west to Long Branch Loop along its regular routing.
- 504 King streetcars will divert onto Queen Street West between Roncesvalles Avenue and Shaw Street. 504A King streetcars will continue to operate between Dundas West Station and Distillery Loop. 504B King streetcars will operate between Humber Loop and Broadview Station before 10 p.m. After 10 p.m., 504B King streetcars will operate between Roncesvalles Avenue and Broadview Station.
- 63 Ossington buses will be extended along King Street West between Dufferin Street and Roncesvalles Avenue. This will provide service both ways along this section of King Street West, Liberty/East Liberty Avenue, and Strachan Avenue.
- 508 Lake Shore streetcars will divert onto Queen Street West between Shaw Street and Roncesvalles Avenue (starting February 19, 2024).

Wheel-Trans services will remain accessible in all areas where local traffic is permitted.
* Details on how TTC routes will be adjusted for streetcar track renewal at the King/Dufferin intersection in June/July 2024 (Phase 3), will be included in Construction Update #1. This update will be mailed ahead of the start of Phase 3 work.

- Phase two: from mid-May to late June 2024, will include streetcar track renewal on King Street West from Dufferin Street to Fraser Avenue.
- Phase three: from June to August 2024, will include streetcar track renewal at the intersection of King Street West and Dufferin Street.
- Phase four: from August to late September 2024, will include top layer streetcar track renewal on King Street West from Fraser Avenue to Atlantic Avenue.

As details regarding this work are finalized the website will be updated.
Please note that excavation activities and concrete and rail removal will be carried out at various times throughout the day. The majority of excavation work will take place between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Around-the-clock (24/7) work during new rail installation by TTC crews is required to preserve the integrity and quality of new rail and concrete. Additional overnight rail work by TTC crews may consist of moving the new rail into position for installation.
Travel and parking restrictions
- In order to complete the watermain replacement work, the roadway will be reduced to a single lane in each direction on King Street West.
- To safely facilitate streetcar track renewal during phases two, four, and five, the section of King Street West where crews are working will be closed to through traffic.
- During phase three, the intersection of King Street West and Dufferin Street will be fully closed to through traffic in all directions to allow crews to replace the streetcar tracks.
- Sidewalk access will generally be maintained for pedestrians. Any temporary disruptions to access will be communicated with signage by the contractor.
- Parking will not be permitted within the work zones.
