Bloor-Yonge Capacity Improvements Project Preparatory Work: Hoarding installation at 81 Bloor Street and 40/42 Hayden Street
Preparatory Work Timeline: Starting as early as May 23, 2023

Beginning as early as, Tuesday, May 23, 2023, wooden construction hoarding will be installed around the perimeter of the properties at 81 Bloor Street and 40/42 Hayden Street. The TTC will be removing the former buildings to construct a new accessible entrance on Bloor Street and the future electrical substation that will provide power and support the Bloor-Yonge Station expansion. Preparatory construction works are not expected to impact subway service or access to Bloor-Yonge Station.
What to Expect
- Access to businesses will be maintained at all times.
- The hoarding installation work will begin as early as Tuesday, May 23, and is expected to last approximately two weeks.
- Work hours will typically be Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Extended, weekend or overnight work hours will be communicated to the community well in advance.
- Hoarding will be painted grey.
- Typical construction noise and vibration can be expected with this work. A forklift will be on-site to help place the hoarding.

Preparatory Work Timeline: Starting as early as May 15, 2023

Beginning as early as, Monday, May 15, 2023, wooden construction hoarding will be installed around the perimeter of the property at 830 Church Street. The TTC will be removing the former carwash at 830 Church Street, beside the Toronto Reference Library, to build a future fan building to enhance air circulation at the station.
What to Expect
- Preparatory construction works are not expected to impact subway service or access to Bloor-Yonge Station.
- There will be a reduction in the Sherlock Holmes Laneway and short-term walkway closures to install hoarding beside the Toronto Reference Library.
- Access to businesses will be maintained at all times.
- The hoarding installation work will begin as early as Monday, May 15, and is expected to last two weeks.
- Work hours will typically be Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Extended, weekend or overnight work hours will be communicated to the community well in advance.
- Hoarding will be painted grey.
- Typical construction noise and vibration can be expected with this work. A forklift will be on-site to help place the hoarding.
Major construction for the station could commence as early as late 2024. Notice will be distributed well in advance of the start of major construction.
Preparatory Work to Expand Bloor-Yonge Station
Bloor-Yonge Station is the busiest subway station on the TTC. The original station opened in 1954 and now requires expansion and modernization to accommodate future TTC ridership and neighbourhood density.
The project includes significant upgrades to enhance customer safety, accessibility and service quality.
Improvements include:
- A new eastbound Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth) passenger platform
- An enhanced westbound Line 2 passenger platform created by reconfiguring the existing shared centre platform
- Expansion of both northbound and southbound Line 1 (Yonge-University) passenger platforms
- Enhanced concourse level
- New elevators, escalators and stairwells to improve station circulation
- A new accessible subway entrance at 81 Bloor Street East
What to Expect

- Preparatory construction works are not expected to impact subway service or access to Bloor-Yonge Station.
- Preparatory work will start as early as April 2023.In order to build a new, accessible subway entrance at 81 Bloor Street East (former site of The Firkin), the TTC will remove the existing structures at 81 Bloor St East, and 40/42 Hayden Street. The TTC will also remove the former carwash at 830 Church Street beside the Toronto Reference Library to build a future fan building to enhance air circulation at the station.
- There will be a reduction in the Sherlock Holmes Laneway and short-term walkway closures to install construction hoarding beside the Toronto Reference Library for this work. At 81 Bloor Street East, there will be some rerouting of pedestrians when the canopy is removed from the existing building during demolition. Short term rerouting of pedestrians to the sidewalk and curb lane in front of 40/42 Hayden Street will also be required.
- At the same time, hydro and sewer utilities will be relocated.
- Phased reductions on the sidewalks and curb lanes are expected on Bloor Street East between Yonge Street and Park Road.
- Access to businesses and residences will be maintained at all times.
- The utility relocation work will begin in Q3 2023 and continue until Q3 2024.
- Work hours will typically be Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Extended, weekend or overnight work hours will be communicated to the community well in advance.
- Typical construction noise and vibration can be expected with this work.
