New railway crossing procedure for TTC buses
The TTC has updated its railway crossing procedure for protected rail crossings with active warning devices only. When operators approach these crossings they will:
- Adjust the operation of their vehicle to the conditions. Scan the area ahead and the tracks in both directions.
- If visual or audible warning devices are activated, they will stop the bus at leave five meters/15 feet from the nearest rail. They will proceed only when the warning devices are disengaged, the gates are entirely upright, and the tracks are clear.
- If warning devices are not activated and there is no train, traffic or other obstruction on or beyond the tracks that could pose a safety risk, they will proceed across the tracks. Operators will never stop their vehicle on or near railroad tracks.
The new procedure will help prevent rail arm contacts and align its procedure with neighbouring transit agencies.
