Blue priority seating focus of latest TTC explainer video

Under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, TTC buses, streetcars and subway trains are equipped with priority seating. Priority seating is designated for use by a person with a disability or a physical limitation. The TTC has enhanced its priority seating areas by changing the colour of designated seats from red to blue, and by adding information decals near those seats that specify who priority seats are for: people with disabilities, seniors and expectant mothers.

A public information and poster campaign is also running in the system to help inform and educate the public about priority seating, including people’s rights and responsibilities. 

Customers that don’t meet the designated requirements for using priority seats must respect priority seating and give up their seat to someone in need. Operators may ask a customer to vacate a priority seat, but cannot enforce priority seating. If necessary, transit enforcement officers may be summoned and, under TTC Bylaw No. 1, can fine those who refuse to give up their seat.

Blue priority seating debuted with the introduction new articulated buses last spring. The TTC is committed to ensuring comfortable, safe and accessible transit for all.
