TTC streetcar service at Broadview and Gerrard to resume by week's end

A serious fire last weekend at the southeast corner of Broadview Ave. and Gerrard St. E. forced the closure of the intersection and diversion of three Toronto Transit Commission streetcar routes in the area – the 504 King, 505 Dundas and 506 Carlton.
Today the Ontario Fire Marshall and City of Toronto have completed their work and the demolition or partial demolition of affected buildings. TTC streetcar service, however, will not return to the area until the end of this week. Today the Ontario Fire Marshall and City of Toronto have completed their work and the demolition or partial demolition of affected buildings. TTC streetcar service, however, will not return to the area until the end of this week.
The demolition work required the wholesale dismantling of the streetcar overheard wires and the main power distribution cables at the intersection, as well as to the east along Gerrard St. The complicated web of wires delivers the power necessary to operate the streetcars. These wires now need to be completely reinstalled - a much more time-consuming and difficult task than the original dismantling of the overhead system. As completion of the work nears, the TTC will advise the public of a more specific date that streetcar service can resume.
The TTC will continue to operate bus shuttles where streetcar service has been suspended as crews work 24/7 to restore the overhead. The TTC would also like to thank its customers for their patience and understanding during this time.
