TTC driver Transit Community Watcher of the year

TTC bus Operator Sherry Newton has been selected as the TTC’s Community Watcher of the Year, in recognition of her role in coming to the aid of girl who had been assaulted.

Operator Newton came to aid of a young girl who was being assaulted and robbed by several other youths.  She offered the victim shelter on the bus, and called for assistance.

TTC Chair Karen Stintz, TTC Chief General Manager Gary Webster and Bell Canada Community Affairs Representative Lena Demarco were on hand for some special presentations, including a $1,000 cheque to the Operator Newton’s charity of choice, The Hospital for Sick Children, courtesy of the program sponsor, Bell Canada.

TTC employees have been enhancing the connection between the community and emergency response services for 18 years now. It was on October 8, 1992 that the TTC’s Transit Community Watch program was officially launched across the city.

The goal of the Transit Community Watch program is to enhance safety and security on the transit system, in the workplace and in the community by encouraging all employees to observe and report any problems or emergencies they encounter.
