Summer Student Program


The Toronto Transit Commission offers student positions during the summer months from approximately May to September. The majority of positions start within the first few of weeks of May and students are required to work for the entire summer term.

The TTC offers a wide range of entry level and specialty positions in various locations throughout the City of Toronto. Most positions involve working in a unionized environment. Some positions may involve working outdoors, while others may require specific licences, skills and/or work experience. The following is a list of positions that may be available (select the job title to view position description):

  • Accounting Clerk

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Sound knowledge of Accounting Principles, such as, Accounts Payable/Receivable may be required.
    • Required to monitor attendance related to section and payroll duties.
    • Preparing Excel spreadsheet summaries for a variety of financial reports.
    • Receiving, sorting and filing memos, forms, reports, etc., that are used as input material for spreadsheets and reports.
    • Preparing Excel spreadsheet summaries for a variety of financial reports.

    Skills/Knowledge/Experience

    Sound knowledge of accounting principles and practices related to financial record-keeping, account analysis and reconciliation. You will require a sound knowledge of modern office practices and procedures including excellent knowledge of grammar, punctuation and spelling. You must have a thorough knowledge of personal computers, and software applications packages related to the work (i.e. Microsoft Office). Possess excellent keyboarding and word processing skills. You will require good organizational skills and the ability to handle several responsibilities at once under minimal supervision; good interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills for dealing with staff at various levels and interact with various TTC and bank personnel.

  • Carhouse Helper (vehicle cleaner)

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Sweep, dust and wash interior and exterior of subway cars.
    • Use of a variety of cleaning equipment necessary to do the work, such as mops, scrubbers, spray applicators, etc.
    • May be assigned special assignments throughout the summer which may include working at different subway stations; i.e. end of the line cleaning.

    Requirements/Working Conditions

    • Will be required to successfully complete TTC's Rule Book & WHMIS training
    • Safety footwear required (provided by the student).

    Shifts

    • Various shifts as follows:
    • 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
    • 3:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.
    • 11:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.
    • Rotating off days
  • Carhouse Operator

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Sweep, dust and wash interior and exterior of streetcars.
    • Use of a variety of cleaning equipment necessary to do the work, such as mops, scrubbers, spray applicators, etc.
    • May be assigned special assignments throughout the summer which may include working at different locations; i.e. end of the line cleaning.

    Requirements/Working Conditions

    • Requires a valid class "G" Ontario Driver's Licence.
    • Will be required to successfully complete TTC's Rule Book & WHMIS training.
    • Safety footwear required (provided by the student).

    Shifts

    • Shifts include days, afternoons, and nights with rotating or mid-week off days.
  • Clerical

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Providing administrative, clerical and secretarial duties.
    • Photocopying and faxing a variety of correspondence.
    • Answering phone calls and forwarding calls to appropriate staff and/or taking messages.
    • Sorting and distribution of incoming/outgoing mail.
    • Data entry using a variety of MS programs or TTC in-house applications.
    • Substituting for administrative staff during periods of overload and/or absence.
    • Payroll for some vacancies.

    Skills/Knowledge/Experience

  • Escalator Mechanic's Helper

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Assist with the maintenance and repair of escalators as well as with minor inspections, replacements and mechanical repairs to subway components.
    • Use of standard mechanic's tools, as well as the use of scaffolding, ladders, slings, jacks, etc.
    • Supplying the Escalator Mechanic or other staff with tools, removing machinery and related equipment required in the course of performing their duties.

    Requirements/Working Conditions

    • Will be required to successfully complete TTC's in-house training relevant to this position.
    • Experience and knowledge of tools.
    • Generally looking for students enrolled in college - Auto or Aircraft Mechanics course; for high school students - any technical school with auto repair, etc.
    • Exposure to dirty, noisy, greasy, dusty, wet and slippery conditions, frequently working in confined areas.
    • Safety boots above the ankles are required (students may be eligible for a safety footwear voucher to help offset some of the cost).

    Shifts

    • Shifts include days, afternoons, and nights.

    • Rotating off days.
    • 40 hour work week (either 8 or 10 hour shifts).
  • Fire Prevention

    The Fire Prevention summer student will assist TTC Fire Prevention personnel. Duties include testing and cleaning fire hoses as well as other fire equipment at various locations throughout the TTC property.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    Under the direct supervision of TTC Fire Prevention personnel, the Fire Prevention summer student's duties and responsibilities involve:

    • Inspecting, testing, cleaning, recharging and installing various fire equipment and accessories used in various TTC buildings, shops, garages, etc. and other facilities including extinguishers, hydrants, hoses, fire doors; and assisting in the testing of fire alarm systems, smoke detectors, fire suppression systems.
    • Performing minor repairs to sprinkler systems, e.g. changing sprinkler heads and various parts in dry valves, etc.
    • Performing other related duties as assigned.

    Requirements/Working Conditions

    You must be currently enrolled in the Fire Protection Engineering Technology Program. You must have a Class "G" or better Ontario Driver's Licence in good standing. Successful candidate(s) must successfully complete the TTC's Defensive Driving test in order to operate a Commission vehicle. In addition, field work requires strict adherence to safety rules and regulations, and involves working in a subway tunnel environment. You must successfully complete the TTC's Subway/SRT Rule Book program which involves written and practical tests.

    High cut safety boots above the ankle are required and must be provided by the student (students may be eligible for a safety footwear voucher to help offset some of the cost).

    Shifts

    Some night shift work may be required which involves working from 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Sunday to Thursday.

  • Landscaping

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Perform routine landscaping duties as well as general labourer duties.
    • Cut grass using self-propelled riding or small power lawn mowers.
    • Replacing sod, pick up debris, leaves, etc.; trim bushes, hedges, small trees, plant flowers and shrubs maintain plant beds, pull weeds, etc.
    • Work is mostly outside, manual tasks include digging, moving and lifting heavy materials, considerable walking, standing, and bending involving moderately heavy physical effort.
    • Intermittent heavy physical work.
    • Use of whippers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, roto-tillers, chain saws, power pruners and other landscaping tools and equipment.
    • Some interlock brick work may be required.
    • Cleaning, stocking and servicing of washrooms and perform other janitorial duties as assigned.

    Requirements/Working Conditions

    • Must complete the Subway/SRT Rule Book program and successfully pass the written and practical tests involved.
    • Hot and humid working conditions; must wear hard hats, gloves, glasses (provided by the TTC) and other personal protective equipment as required.
    • Safety footwear required (provided by the student).
    • Considerable walking/standing occasional climbing of steep slopes and working at track level in close proximity to moving vehicles.
    • Exposed to dirty, dusty and wet conditions and inclement weather.

    Shifts

    • Day shift - weekends off.
    • Predominantly day shift but afternoon shift and weekend work also required depending on operational needs.
  • Service Person

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • May involve janitorial work.
    • Cleaning interior and exterior of buses which involves mopping, washing, dusting, vacuuming, sweeping. Degumming, graffiti removal, cleaning of unsanitary buses, seat cleaning, etc., using a variety of specialized cleaning equipment.
    • May be required to operate steam cleaning equipment.
    • May be trained on scrubber/sweeper vehicle.
    • May involve checking and replenishing fluid levels and fuelling the buses.
    • May involve moving and parking buses in the garage before and after fuelling, oiling and related servicing operations; and may also involve driving buses for change-off purposes.

    Requirements/Working Conditions

    • Requires a valid class "G" Ontario Driver's Licence - CZ driver's licence training will be provided by the TTC (on an as needed basis).
    • Exposure to dirty, dusty, noisy, wet conditions, and exhaust fumes.

    Shifts

    • Shifts include days, afternoons, and nights with rotating or mid-week off days
  • Station Ambassador

    This position is a front-line customer service related position, which has been developed to assist tourist's travelling by TTC to major events in the downtown core.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Responsible for handing out TTC Ride Guides, pamphlets, etc. to customers at various subway locations.
    • Responsible for providing customers with directions to nearby attractions.
    • Responsible for assisting customers with general information.

    Requirements/Working Conditions

    • Strong customer service skills and knowledge of the City of Toronto's downtown attractions (would be an asset).
    • Will be required to interact with customers.
    • May be required to stand during the duration of your shift next to a portable kiosk.
    • Will be required to successfully complete TTC's in-house training relevant to this position.
    • Safety footwear required (students may be eligible for a safety footwear voucher to help offset some of the cost).

    Shifts

    • 35 hour work week which includes working weekends with mid-week off days. You must be flexible as you can be scheduled to work different shifts throughout the week.
  • Station Collector

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Responsible for selling various fare media such as tickets, tokens, Metropasses, and other types of transit passes to the public, and providing change as required.
    • Responsible for collecting proper fares (tickets, tokens, cash) and checking on the validity of passes transfers, etc.
    • You will be required to balance working account at any time upon request.

    Requirements/Working Conditions

    • Customer service skills, strong math skills (math test administered during interview).
    • Previous cashier experience preferred.
    • Bending and lifting up to 40 lbs.
    • Must be extremely flexible, you may not know shift until night before.

    Shifts

    • (Various shifts/split shifts.)
    • 5:30 a.m. - 2:00 a.m. (own transportation is preferred).
    • Rotating off days.
  • Storeperson

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Assisting with the loading and unloading of parts, material and equipment, often without assistance, from skids and wagons at the loading platforms
    • Assisting in receiving, checking and placing parts, material and equipment at various locations as required
    • Perform routine clerical duties, including filing of packing slips and other forms and reports

    Requirements/Working Conditions

    • Must possess a valid class "G" Ontario Driver's Licence for forklift training
    • Previous inventory, shipping and receiving experience preferred
    • Dirty/noisy environment (various working locations)
    • Safety footwear required (students may be eligible for a safety footwear voucher to help offset some of the cost)

    Shifts

    • Various shifts, Monday - Friday (may involve some weekend work)
    • 40 hour work week
  • Subway Janitor

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Perform routine janitorial duties including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing and polishing various surfaces.
    • Open and close stations, starting escalators and assisting co-workers as instructed.
    • Providing customer service usually related to directional enquires.
    • Assist in maintaining an adequate supply of station materials by informing office staff of shortages.
    • Completing routine forms, records, etc. pertaining to occurrences. Including: acts of vandalism, damage to TTC property, etc.
    • Responding to instructions for assistance by Transit Control.
    • Perform all duties as identified in the posted schedules.
    • All tasks to be performed in such a manner as to safeguard TTC property, customer safety and personal security.

    Requirements

    • Will be required to successfully complete Subway/SRT Rule Book instruction.
    • Must successfully complete WHMIS training.
    • Required completing a two-day departmental procedure training course.
    • Be able to understand verbal and written instructions.
    • Individual must be able to perform all duties with minimal supervision.

    Working Conditions

    • Generally, all work is light physical activity rated (occasionally moderately heavy tasks must be performed).
    • Exposure to minor injuries including slips, falls or strains.
    • Work locations are generally dusty with routine exposure to noise, inclement weather and large crowds.
    • Occasional contact with abusive customers (this includes both verbal and physical abuse).

    Shifts

    • Janitorial duties are performed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (subsequently, shifts include days, afternoons, and nights with rotating off days).
  • Wheel-Trans Reservationist (Call Centre)

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Assist with handling calls related to Wheel-Trans customers.
    • Arrange appointments, cancellations, etc. related to Wheel-Trans customers.
    • Book, confirm, cancel and make adjustments to trips for people who are disabled.
    • Provide policy and procedure information on Wheel-Trans and accessible services.
    • Handle complaints and general service inquiries.

    Requirements/Working Conditions

    • Customer service/call centre experience preferred.
    • Office environment.
    • Knowledge of hospitals and health centres throughout the GTA.

    Shifts

    • Monday - Sunday, rotating off days.
    • Various shifts.
    • 7 - 3 p.m.;
    • 3 - 11 p.m., and sometimes 5:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

    Location

    • 580 Commissioners Street (south of Queen Street near Leslie Street)

The TTC operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Therefore, students must be flexible and willing to work shift work, as 80% of the positions available involve working various shifts (afternoons, nights, etc.), which may include working weekends and holidays.

Eligibility

To be considered for summer student employment, students must be:
  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • A full-time student, enrolled in full-time studies in the current academic terms/year in either Grade 12 or a post-secondary institution; and
  • Returning to full-time studies in the Fall and Winter academic terms/year.
  • Some positions require a non-probationary Ontario Driver’s Licence, Class "G".

Students will be asked to provide proof that these requirements are met prior to attending an interview.

Successful candidates will be required to undergo a criminal records search prior to commencement of employment (at your own expense).

The Toronto Transit Commission will complete education, work, security and reference checks which will be used for employment assessment purposes only.

Employment is conditional upon satisfactory reference checks, a criminal record search, and completion of pre-placement health assessment related to the position.
