Line 1 Automatic Train Control
Line 1 is now operating on a new, state-of-the-art signalling system called Automatic Train Control or ATC.
Portions of the previous signalling system dated back to the 1950s when the subway first opened. The implementation of ATC represents an important step forward in modernizing Canada’s busiest subway system and is essential to providing the best service possible for our customers.
Increased reliability – ATC gives us the capacity to safely run more trains closer together, which means more reliable service.
Improved travel times – trains on ATC run consistently and as close to the civil speed limit as possible, making travel times shorter and more consistent. New signals mean fewer delays due to signal issues.
Lower operating costs – train electricity usage will become much more efficient.

Planning has begun on the re-signalling of Line 2. The TTC will be:
- Initiating a study to select the starting location of the Line 2 ATC system and determine what existing equipment can be incorporated
- Starting the procurement process for an engineering consultant
- Tendering the project and procuring a contractor
