Our commitment to environmental sustainability

Public consultation

The TTC is committed to doing its part to address the global climate emergency with a strategy that prioritizes climate mitigation and adaptation efforts to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040, while increasing our operational resilience to climate change.

Innovation and Sustainability Framework

Innovation and environmental sustainability are key priorities for the TTC. Operating one of the largest fleets of battery-electric buses in North America puts us at the leading edge of transit innovation and sustainability. To maintain our leadership in the industry, we must continue to innovate for the future and apply a sustainability lens to everything we do.

That’s why we created the new Innovation and Sustainability Program (ISP) to lead the organization in delivering our commitments under our 5-Year Corporate Plan and the City of Toronto’s TransformTO Net Zero Strategy  – an action plan that responds to the climate emergency by focusing on reaching net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions community-wide by 2040.

Since transportation and buildings are a significant source of Toronto’s carbon footprint, many of the actions necessary to reach net zero by 2040 directly relate to the TTC.

Following TTC Board approval in April 2024, the Framework describes the draft actions TTC proposes that will contribute to the reduction of city-wide GHG emissions to achieve net zero by 2040.

Following consultations, the actions will be updated and the Innovation and Sustainability Strategy will be presented to the Board in mid-2024.
